Our daughter, Ariel, does not sit still for any television show or movie that goes beyond the thirty minute mark. That has been a golden a rule since her birth. We even tried to take the kids to see “Wall-E” at the movies when it first came out. I know that seems crazy, but we feel we have to keep trying. Anyways, our “Wall-E” attempt was an incomplete failure. Nemo loved it! Ariel loved it until the credits ended. I think she believed that the credits were the actual feature, so when they ended she jumped up and down, stimmed and shouted repeatedly. Dad removed her from the theater. That was our first and last attempt at watching a family movie in a theater.
Today I actually had hope for our movie watching future. We rented the movie “Dumbo” and we just knew that since it was a full length movie, Ariel would not sit through it. Nemo was very excited to see the movie and Ariel was sitting on the floor facing the television while I combed her hair. I finished combing her hair and she sat still. I held my breath and looked at my husband. We both shrugged and made strange faces at one another. As the minutes ticked by, Ariel continued to sit still. She had a bag of barrettes in front of her that she was playing with as she sat. It was still unbelievable. Sixty-four minutes later the movie ended and she clapped. We could not believe it. Of course, I analyzed the content of the movie and drew extreme conclusions about her ability to attend for more than thirty minutes. 1) She loves animals and the movie is full of animals 2) She loves music and the musical score runs throughout the entire movie and finally, (this one may be a stretch) 3) She related to the main “special” character (Dumbo). Whatever the reason, we hope that this is the beginning of something wonderful. Thanks Dumbo!
